Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine

The Faculty is launching a new postgraduate Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine in October 2008. This programme is aimed at providing a qualification to health professionals working in remote and offshore environments. The challenges of working in this type of geography and the political climate of the location necessitates a unique skills set.

The entry requirements are:
• an undergraduate health professional qualification and
• relevant work experience.

Main aim of the programme
The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote and in some instances potentially hazardous locations the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in a remote environment using an evidence based approach.

Programme Structure
The course will be 1200 hours of taught material over 12 modules with online assessment for each module. These modules will run for 3 months at a time and students will be required to complete the qualification in less than 5 years. The proposed modules are as follows:

Compulsory modules (10)
• Health and wellbeing of the remote worker
• Occupational health
• Traditional Medicine and Cultural Awareness
• Telemedicine
• Dive medicine
• Tropical medicine
• Aeromedicine
• Trauma and medical emergencies
• Incident and response planning
• Evidence and research in remote medicine

Optional modules (2)
• Tactical medicine
• Expedition and wilderness medicine
• Principals of medical education
• Humanitarian and disaster medicine

Students will also attend a 4 day residential component, at the end of the taught programme. The purpose of this is to provide further opportunities for face to face interaction and final formal assessment.

This assessment will consist of:
• Skills stations
• OSCE
• Project panel interview
• Major incident simulation

Students can exit the programme at PG Certificate level on fulfillment of the first 7 modules from the above list.

Programme Delivery
All taught content will be delivered via the internet and where possible in a range of formats to facilitate offline study. Students will join a learner-centered community of learners and use a range of flexible learning methods including participation in discussion forums, online seminars and wikis and accessing resources in a range of formats. You will also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with and learn from a wide range of people including students and tutors.

Short CPD Modules
In addition to the Diploma Programme there are currently two short modules available "Introduction to Telemedicine for the Remote Medic" and "Telemedicine Applications 1".

The above CPD courses are recognised through the RCSEd points system.

For those interested in trying the CPD modules to get a flavour for the DipROM with a view to going on to study for it, we will investigate options for taking into consideration any short modules that you have already completed but this may entail further work on your part.
